Kerbing
Part of most surfacing schemes we carry out, and available as standalone work.
Edges are where surfaces fail first. Without restraint, tarmac spreads under load, breaks away at the perimeter and lets water into the sub-base. Kerbing is what stops that, and it also sets the levels and falls everything else is laid to.
What we install
- Precast concrete kerbs — half battered, bullnose and splayed
- Edgings and channel lines to car parks, footpaths and driveways
- Traffic islands, build-outs and protective kerb lines
- Dropped kerbs and crossings for vehicle access
- Conservation and natural stone kerbs where the setting calls for it
- Reinstatement of damaged or displaced kerb lines
How it is laid
Kerbs are bedded on a concrete foundation and haunched behind, then left to cure before surfacing is laid against them. Cutting corners here — bedding on sand, skipping the haunch, surfacing too soon — is why kerb lines move, and a moving kerb takes the surface with it.
Dropped kerbs
A dropped kerb onto a public highway needs approval from the local highway authority, and the crossing must be constructed to their specification. We can tell you what your application is likely to require; the permission itself is applied for by the property owner.
