Groundworks

Excavation, formation and sub-base construction — the works that decide whether the surface above lasts.

Groundworks

Part of most surfacing schemes we carry out, and available as standalone work.

Groundworks is the part of a surfacing scheme that nobody sees and everybody pays for twice if it is skimped. It covers everything between the ground as found and the point where surfacing can start.

What it covers

  • Site strip, excavation to formation and removal of arisings
  • Proof-rolling to identify soft spots, and dig-out or stabilisation where they are found
  • Capping and geotextile or geogrid where ground conditions require it
  • Sub-base laying and compaction in layers, usually MOT Type 1
  • Setting levels and falls so water goes where it is designed to
  • Edge restraint: kerbs, edgings and haunching
  • Ducting for lighting, EV charging and services laid before the surface goes down

Why the survey matters

Ground conditions are the single largest source of variation between a quote and a final account. Where there is doubt — made ground, high water table, previous structures — we would rather trial-hole first and price on what is actually there.
