Driveway resurfacing

A tired driveway does not always need digging up. Where the base is still sound, resurfacing gives you a new surface for a good deal less.

In short

Driveway resurfacing lays a new surface over an existing drive, or planes off the worn layer and replaces it. It suits drives that are worn, faded or lightly cracked but structurally sound. Where cracking is caused by a failed base or poor drainage, resurfacing is a temporary fix and full replacement is the honest recommendation.

Plenty of driveways that look finished are not. Surface fretting, faded colour, moss in the joints and a few shallow cracks are all surface problems, and the structure underneath may have years left in it.

The test is what the cracks are doing. Fine crazing across the surface is wear. Long cracks that follow a line, edges breaking away, or areas that flex under a car are signs the base or the drainage has failed, and no amount of new material on top will hold.

When resurfacing is the right call

Levels: the constraint that decides the method

An overlay raises your driveway by the depth laid, usually 25–40mm. That matters where the drive meets:

  • A doorway threshold or garage door
  • Airbricks or a damp-proof course
  • A dropped kerb or the pavement
  • Existing gullies, channels or manhole covers

Where the extra height causes a problem, we plane off the old surface first and lay back to the original level instead. It costs more and it is often the only sensible option.

What the work involves

  1. Clean off, kill any vegetation and cut out failed areas
  2. Repair those areas back to a sound base
  3. Plane the existing surface where levels demand it
  4. Apply a bond coat so the new material bonds to the old
  5. Lay and roll the new surface course
  6. Reinstate edges and check that water still drains where it should

Most drives are a one-day job, two if there is planing or significant repair.

How projects run

The same five stages on every job, scaled to the site.

  1. Site survey

We measure the area, assess the existing surface and ground conditions, and check access for plant and deliveries.

  2. Specification and quote

A written quote setting out the build-up, depths, materials, drainage, edgings and what is excluded.

  3. Preparation

Planing or excavation, removal of arisings, sub-base laying and compaction, plus any drainage and kerbing.

  4. Laying

Binder and surface courses laid and rolled to the specified depth, with joints and levels set out against falls.

  5. Handover

Line marking where required, site cleared, and written guidance on when the surface can take traffic.
